Question / Issue
I heard in one of your MP3's about the state of the dead, and it all sounds pretty convincing. I've been brought up an Adventist, but have recently discovered Colossians 2:16 & Hebrews 10:1. Awesome stuff. But are you sure that Luke 16 is not a parable? I remember you saying that all parables began with "And he spake to them in a parable..." But not all parables seem to start that way?

Answer / Solution

Yes, it is different from parables in a number of ways:

  1. It's not referred to as a parable.
  2. Actual names are used.  In the parables nothing like this is ever done.  Jesus would say, "A sower went out to sow..." or "A certain man..." or "A woman lost a coin...".  But in this incident He actually names the believing person involved.
  3. If it were a parable, it still teaches conscious, continual life after death, doesn't it?

Hope this helps.
